Your shoes tell a story about your feet, posture, and overall health. Learn what to look for—and how Genfinity’s custom orthotics can help.
Are you listening to what your shoes are saying?
For most of us, shoes are either fashion or function. They protect our feet or go with our clothes. But here’s the truth: your shoes provide hints about how healthy your feet are.
Every scuff, worn-down sole, or irregular tread pattern tells a tale about how you walk, stand, and even how your body absorbs impact.
At Genfinity, we often start by looking at a patient’s footwear. Their shoes often show problems they didn’t even aware they had.
What Worn Shoes Can Tell You
1. The outer heel is worn unevenly.
If the rear edge of your heel wears out first, it probably suggests you’re a supinator, which means your feet roll outward as you walk or run.
- Possible effects include sprained ankles, shin splints, and stress fractures.
- An orthotic solution gives you padding and support to help your stride line up.
2. Heavy wear on the inside edge
This is a classic indicator of overpronation, which is when the arches fall inward.
- Possible effects: flat feet, plantar fasciitis, pain in the knees or hips.
- Orthotic solution: structural arch support to keep your step steady.
3. A flat toe box or a worn-out front sole
If your toes are wearing out too quickly, it means you’re pushing off harder than usual, which is generally because your calves are tight or your ankles don’t move well.
- Possible effects include soreness in the forefoot, bunions, or hammertoes.
- Orthotic solution: support that takes weight off of one area and spreads it out evenly.
4. Only One Shoe Looks Different
If one shoe wears out faster than the other, it can imply that you are putting more weight on one side of your body.
- Possible effects include leg length differences, pelvic misalignment, or past injuries that change the way you walk.
- Orthotic solution: a custom-made fix to even out your stride and keep your joints safe.
5. Sides that are bulging or stretched out
If your shoes go wider, it could mean that your arches are collapsing or that you’re carrying too much weight on the inside of your foot.
- Possible effects: tired feet, stressed joints, and problems with knee tracking.
- Orthotic solution: strengthening the arch and putting it back in place.
Why This Matters More Than Your Feet
Your ankles, knees, hips, and spine are all affected by how your feet move.
A shoe tread that isn’t even isn’t merely a cosmetic problem; it’s a warning sign. If you don’t deal with it, it can lead to: • Chronic back discomfort • Wear and tear on the hips and knees • A higher risk of falls (particularly in older people) • Sports injuries and worse performance.
That’s why we at Genfinity think of shoes as medical records you wear every day.
Genfinity’s Use of Shoe Analysis
One of the first things we’ll do when you come in for a consultation is ask you to bring the shoes you wear the most.
This is how we use them:
- We look at the tread patterns, compression, and wear points with our eyes.
- Biomechanical assessment: We look at how your shoes fit and how you walk, stand, and move in them.
- Pressure mapping: This high-tech tool shows you exactly where your feet are putting extra stress.
- Custom orthotic design: We use your personal information to make orthotics that fix imbalances and stop problems from happening in the future.
It’s not only about replacing shoes; it’s about fixing your body’s base.
How to Pick the Right Shoes
Your shoes are still very important for keeping your feet healthy, even if you wear orthotics.
- Change your shoes every 300 to 500 miles (or every 6 to 12 months).
- Pick shoes that have a strong heel counter, which is the section in the back that holds your heel.
- If you wear custom orthotics, look for insoles that can be taken out.
DON’T: Wear shoes that are absolutely flat and don’t offer any support, like flip-flops or ballerina flats. - Hold on to shoes long after they should have been thrown away just because they “look fine.”
- Don’t pay attention to new aches or pains; they could be indicators of something bad.
The Genfinity Difference
We at Genfinity recognize that your health journey doesn’t start and end with your feet; it’s about how your full body moves.
We don’t simply tell you about the health of your feet when we look at your shoes; we also help you make smarter decisions that keep your:
- How easy it is to move around.
- How comfortable it is in the long run.
- How it feels to sit up straight.
When you add our custom orthotics, you’re not simply buying inserts; you’re also investing in how you’ll walk in the future.
